A PBX is typically a digital system using TDM.  An IP PBX is given an IP address on the customer’s Local Area Network, LAN as are each of the telephones.  The calls are transmitted using IP or internet protocol.

That is keeping it pretty simple.

It really depends on how robust your network is on whether you want to use an IP PBX.  It is very easy to do moves, adds and changes with an IP system.

Three Reasons To Use Session Initiation Protocol trunks are as follows:

1.  They provide a lower cost per line and lower usage than typical analog lines from the phone company (ILEC or CLEC) or from another provider like the cable company.
2.  SIP Trunks provide the end user a lot of flexibility versus traditional lines in the way of real time routing of calls.  Features like Find Me / Follow Me can be updated real time as well.
3.  Disaster Recovery is a real benefit.  Should the customer premise equipment fail or the power go out, SIP trunks can instantaneously reroute calls to predetermined destinations such as cell phones, branch or remote offices or even home offices.

What Is An IP/PBX?

Also known as an Internet Protocol Private Branch Exchange, an IP/PBX is a phone system that uses a company’s LAN to transmit voice communications.

Compared to tradtional digital phone system the need for separate voice and data lines is eliminated.  The phones or endpoints are also independent of the physical node and can be moved from office to office or building to building and have the user’s information follow the phone.

Additionally, they are able to provide the gateway needed for SIP Trunks that would come from an ITSP or internet telephony service provider.  This would replace the need for an IAD that would translate the SIP signal to a usable analog signal for a regular telephone system.

“How do you control access to your facility?”
“How do you keep track of who’s going into and out of your facility’s more secure areas”
“How do you minimize theft of company property by outsiders or your own employees?”

Video surveillance is an added feature to the Communication Server that enables these things.
